Geographical Indications

About service

A geographical indication (GI) is a unique IP object - a sign used on products with a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin. Using the protected geographical indication creates significant added value to products in comparison with similar conventional ones. By contrast with more traditional IP objects, there is no globally harmonized approach to protecting GI. Currently, the main ways of protection include sui generis systems, collective or certification marks, methods focusing on business practices, and administrative product approval schemes.

We help our clients to choose the most effective tools depending on the client’s goals resulting from the GI protection and are experienced in meeting all legislative requirements.

Our expertise in this area includes the following:

·        Developing strategies for protection of GIs

·        Availability searches and legal opinions

·        Monitoring and watch services

·        GI filings and prosecution

·        Pre-grant and post-grant oppositions, amicable settlements

·        Recording amendments

·        GI enforcement

·        Advising on advertising and antitrust regulations

·        Customs protection and anti-counterfeiting
